In December, our coastal ambassadors worked on a volunteer project at Long Point Wildlife Refuge in West Tisbury. At the Refuge, ambassadors constructed new bluebird boxes to replace the old ones along the field loop trail. Bluebirds prefer nesting and foraging in open field habitats with little tree cover, so the regularly mowed field at Long Point is suitable for this important species, which was once rare.
Ambassadors worked on this project alongside Trustees’ staff members Eli Ptaszynski (Up Island Steward), Dan Karparis (Down Island Steward), and Shea Fee (Coastal Ecologist). Each of these staff members talked about their work at the Trustees, their background and education, and what inspired them to follow their current career paths in coastal conservation. Together, ambassadors and staff members worked to build the new bluebird boxes. Then, students worked on creating posts for an Instagram story on the Trustees Martha’s Vineyard account (watch in the Highlights @thetrusteesmv) about the YCAP program and the staff members they met that day.
