The Trustees of Reservations is proud to protect and steward the irreplaceable, including numerous threatened and endangered species around the state, and along the coast. This includes the Piping Plover, which nests at several of our properties, with our largest population on Crane Beach in Ipswich.
With the help and continued support of our beachgoers, 70 pairs (nearly 10% of the state population) of piping plovers and 106 plover chicks fledged from Trustees beaches during summer 2019 and preliminary reports indicate a 9.7% increase in piping plover pairs statewide from 2018.
This summer, the Piping Plover population on Crane Beach had a record year, with 49 pairs of plovers fledging 96 chicks. In this episode, two Trustees ecologists detail the triumphs, tragedies and inside story of just what it takes to steward and manage a shorebird season on our beaches.
Guests: Jeffrey Denoncour, Trustees Coastal Ecologist; and Russell Hopping, Trustees Lead Coastal Ecologist
