Through The Trustees’ Corporate Volunteer Program, volunteers from Breckinridge Capital Advisors joined The Trustees at Old Town Hill Reservation on October 2 for a work day on the marsh. The volunteer group learned about the innovative nature-based technique being used to help “heal” this vital ecosystem and habitat, before pitching in with the process.
First, salt marsh hay was mowed adjacent to the ditches being healed, and the group helped to secure the freshly mown marsh hay into the bottom of each ditch. In the ditches being remediated, the hay will begin collecting sediment from the incoming tides, naturally rebuilding the peat and “healing” the ditch to restore beneficial hydrology. Maintaining the correct balance of natural flooding and draining is essential to keep the marsh healthy, allowing it to keep pace with sea level rise.

Many thanks to our friends from Breckinridge!
